Ladders, Power Tools, Beans and Mandarins

What is it with boys and power tools? Was great to see Lawrie way up high on a flimsy ladder with a chain saw - higher Lawrie, higher Lawrie- anyway I was happy to hold the ladder and see another supreme effort in lopping off two branches that were blocking off the sun ( what sun?) from our kiwi fruit.

These now going into winter deciduous mode and losing all their leaves; hopefully next spring / summer we will have these produce flowers and finally fruit for our Christmas pavlovas after three years of watching and waiting.

But beans and peas highlight our photos today - broad beans are growing well in two locations and are not being eaten away by bugs like our red cabbages ; the snow peas are beginning to flower, so little cute pods will start appearing soon, don’t they always taste better straight from the vine.

Our carrots have been duds so Margaret and Marguerite planted red onions , another first for our garden. Planks have been placed over our parsnips to keep them warm and encourage growth.
A bucket load of tuberous artichokes were dug up and shared with the congregation - these are lovely baked or added to a thick soup, but remember they are not called fartichokes for nothing!

Alright I will mention pumpkins……. Pumpkins! That’s enough on these beauties this week

Mandarins have a big crop, fingers crossed they stay on the tree to fully ripen, our lime has settled in nicely and the orange tree has more fruit to give.

Not a bad weekend finished off nicely with a lovely cuppa and chocolate slice from our resident treat maker Liz

Happy gardening,

Mick
